English colonies in America would soon spread from New Hampshire to Georgia. Maryland was founded by Cecilius Calvert in 1634 as a safe haven for Catholics. The Catholic leadership passed a law of religious toleration in 1649, only to see it repealed it when Puritans took over the colony’s assembly. Clergy and buildings belonging to both the Catholic and Puritan religions were subsidized by a general tax. Laws mandated that everyone attend a house of worship and pay taxes that funded the salaries of ministers.

This book was only a small glimpse of the hardships and dangers encountered by the Pilgrims, but it encouraged other Puritans to immigrate during the Great Migration between 1620 and 1640. In the New England colonies families often kept small farms to provide food for themselves. The women milked the cows, gathered eggs, and preserved food for winter.

The deceased were cremated and buried with soapstone bowls, broadspears, gouges, axes and occasionally native copper. New species such as goosefoot and amaranth appeared in the region, but were not clearly domesticated. Ragweed pollen increases in sediment cores from Lake Nippeneckit in southeastern Massachusetts, suggesting artificial burning and clearing of forests.

In 1641, Massachusetts expanded inland significantly, acquiring the Connecticut River Valley settlement of Springfield, which had recently disputed with, and defected from its original administrators, the Connecticut Colony. This established Massachusetts’ southern border in the west, though surveying problems resulted in disputed territory until 1803–04. This family were some of the 700+ Passengers of the Winthrop Fleet which sailed from England to settle the Massachusetts Bay Colony at Salem in 1630 under the guidance of Gov. John Winthrop. It is reported that during the first year nearly 200 of these colonists died and another 100 returned to England.

Lumber became an important part of the shipbuilding industry because it could build ships for the colonies. The Plymouth settlers were different from other people in the area because they were quiet and orderly. Although the Mayflower Compact is seen as an important step in developing democratic government in America, the agreement was one-sided because the settlers promised obedience, and the Pilgrim founders promised very little in return. Houses were built around the Meeting House, and this was a common public place where they held church, meetings, and school. Pilgrims stopped trying to solve expensive and time-consuming problems defending the colony from attack.

The southern colonies held the belief that the family had the responsibility of educating their children, mirroring the common belief in Europe. Wealthy families either used tutors and governesses from Britain or sent children to school in England. By the 1700s, university students based in the colonies began to act as tutors.

After its founding, other settlers traveled from England to join the colony. His eldest son inherited the charter, and his grandson, Leonard Calvert, founded the colony and became its first governor in 1634. Although the Calverts had encouraged Protestants as well as Catholics to settle in the colony, many Protestants were not happy with the Catholic Calvert’s leadership.
